An Update for Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, and Texas

Carter Mecher MD -- Medical Advisor
August 12, 2021

Here is a Louisiana update. Cases, number of patients hospitalized and number of patients in the ICU are still rising. The amount of people in the ICU is now 61% above the all-time pandemic high in Spring 2020. The number of daily deaths is approaching the Winter wave level.

Florida continues to show worrying trends. The number of patients hospitalized and number of patients in the ICU continue to climb. The number of patients hospitalized in FL is now 29% above the previous all-time pandemic high from last summer. The number of patients in the ICU in FL is 24% above the previous all-time pandemic high. The healthcare system in FL (along with LA, MS, AR) is severely stressed with critically ill COVID patients. Data estimates provided here show the number of patients on ventilators. In FL (69%), LA (45%), MS (63%), MO (52%). The % of ICU patients on a ventilator tells you about the acuity/severity of the ICU patients. Those are high percentages of already high ICU numbers.

Georgia is accelerating in the amount of cases, patients hospitalized, and number of patients admitted to the ICU. GA currently has #Hospitalized = 4,403 (72% of all-time pandemic high) and #ICU = 984.  #Hospitalized/Million = 415/M.  #ICU/Million = 93/M. Like other leading edge states, numbers of cases in children are exceeding all-time pandemic highs. Georgia is also seeing significant increases across the age groups.

Texas is experiencing similar acceleration. #Hospitalized = 11,175 (79% of all-time pandemic high) and #ICU = 2,777 (73% of all-time pandemic high).  #Hospitalized/Million = 385/M.  #ICU/Million = 96/M. Deaths are now rising in both Georgia and Texas.  Georgia (with a population of more than 10M), and TX (with a population of more than 30M) will be driving the acceleration in the national epi curves.
