ADVISORY
WNV cases in Itay double in a week
08/08/2025
Italy

Recommendation: West Nile virus (WNV) activity in Italy typically occurs in the summer and early fall. Organizations should reduce mosquito habitats by eliminating sources of standing water and applying insecticides to outdoor water storage containers. Employees can reduce infection risk by wearing clothing that covers skin, using mosquito repellents, and emptying standing water.

Situation: WNV case numbers in Italy have doubled in the past week, from 89 to 173 confirmed cases. Of these, 11 resulted in death and 72 progressed to a neuroinvasive form of the disease. Over half of the cases were reported in the Lazio Region, mostly in Latina Province. Rising WNV transmission in Italy poses a risk for the ongoing Jubilee of 2025, which is estimated to attract over 35 million pilgrims to Rome over the course of the year-long event (see PHC alert on 5/6). See PHC alerts on 8/1 and 7/11 for earlier info. [Confidence: Very High]

A cat dies of plague in Jefferson County, CO
08/08/2025
Colorado, Jefferson County

Recommendation: Plague occurs in wildlife throughout areas of the western US, including Colorado, but human and pet cases are rare. Avoiding contact with wildlife is a best practice for organizations with employees who work outside.

Situation: Jefferson County health officials in Colorado have confirmed the 1st plague case of the year in a domestic cat located in Evergreen near Cub Creek Park. This is the 1st plague case in an animal in the County since 2023. The cat did not survive the illness. Infected pets and plague-infected fleas carried on pets can expose humans to the disease. Animal cases can also be an early indicator that plague is in the area, and to take extra precautions. [Confidence: Very High]

ADVISORY
Potential first-ever case of locally acquired malaria in Washington state
08/07/2025
Washington, Pierce County

Recommendation: Malaria is not endemic in the United States (US). About 2000 malaria cases are reported annually in the US, with most linked to international travel where malaria is more common. Organizations in Washington can support mosquito control measures at their facilities by eliminating standing water. Employees should prevent mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent, and consult with their healthcare provider before departure about malaria prevention and treatment.

Situation: Health officials reported that an East Pierce County woman with no travel history was diagnosed with malaria on 8/2. If confirmed, this would be the first known locally acquired case of malaria in the state of Washington. Malaria is spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. Health officials are implementing mosquito trapping and testing in the area to monitor for further activity. Officials stated that the risk of infection remains very low and that mosquito populations in Pierce County are declining. [Confidence: Very High]
